Correct Nasal Proportions and Restore Optimal Breathing

Rhinoplasty, commonly known as a nose job, is a surgical procedure that improves the appearance and function of the nose. It can alter the shape, size, or proportion of the nose to enhance facial balance, correct deformities, or address breathing difficulties. Rhinoplasty can reshape the nasal bridge, refine the tip, narrow the nostrils, or correct structural issues like a deviated septum. The procedure is tailored to the patient’s unique facial features and can address both cosmetic and functional concerns in a single surgery.

What a Rhinoplasty Can Do for You

Whether you want to improve the shape of your nose, repair an injury, or breathe easier, rhinoplasty can address a full range of cosmetic and functional concerns. It is an effective procedure to:

  • Reduce the size of a disproportionate nose
  • Smooth a bump on the bridge of the nose
  • Refine the tip of the nose and nostrils
  • Repair a nose that has been broken or collapsed from trauma
  • Straighten a deviated septum

Am I a Good Candidate for a Rhinoplasty?

You may be a good candidate for rhinoplasty if you’re in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcome. The ideal candidates typically seek to improve the appearance of their nose or correct breathing issues caused by structural issues. Rhinoplasty can address cosmetic concerns like asymmetry, a prominent nasal hump, or a drooping tip. It’s also used to correct functional problems, like a deviated septum, that impact breathing.

However, to qualify for a rhinoplasty, you must be physically healthy, free from conditions that could complicate healing, and be a non-smoker or willing to quit before and after surgery. Dr. Stein will carefully evaluate your health, goals, and anatomy to determine if rhinoplasty is right for you and ensure the procedure meets your needs.

Types of Rhinoplasty

Closed Rhinoplasty
In a closed rhinoplasty, all incisions are made inside the nostrils, leaving no visible scars. This technique is often used for patients who need minor adjustments, such as smoothing a nasal hump or refining the tip. Closed rhinoplasty offers a shorter recovery time and less swelling compared to the open approach, but it may be more limited in scope for complex changes.

Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty involves a small incision between the nostrils, providing full access to the nasal structure. This method is ideal for patients requiring significant reshaping or correction, as the surgeon has greater visibility and control. While open rhinoplasty may result in a slightly longer recovery, the incision typically heals well and becomes barely noticeable over time.

Revision Rhinoplasty
Revision rhinoplasty is performed to correct or improve results from a previous nose surgery. This procedure can address both cosmetic and functional issues that were not fully resolved or have arisen since the initial surgery. Revision rhinoplasty is often more complex due to the presence of scar tissue, and it requires a surgeon with specialized expertise.

Ethnic Rhinoplasty
Ethnic rhinoplasty enhances the nose while respecting the patient’s unique ethnic features. The goal is to create a natural result that complements the individual’s face without erasing their heritage. This procedure often involves special considerations for skin thickness, nasal structure, and aesthetic preferences based on cultural beauty standards.

Functional Rhinoplasty
Functional rhinoplasty is focused on improving nasal function, typically to address breathing problems caused by structural issues like a deviated septum or nasal valve collapse. While it can also involve aesthetic improvements, the primary goal is to enhance airflow and correct any internal obstructions that impact breathing or cause recurrent sinus infections.

Teenage Rhinoplasty
Teenage rhinoplasty is performed on patients who are still developing but need nasal correction for aesthetic or functional reasons. It’s crucial that the patient’s facial growth is nearly complete, typically around age 16 for girls and 17 for boys. The surgeon also considers the patient’s emotional maturity and expectations to determine if they’re a suitable candidate.

    What Happens During Rhinoplasty?

In Raleigh, rhinoplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure under twilight anesthesia, also called IV sedation. Most incisions are concealed inside the nose or along its natural creases, eventually leaving no noticeable evidence of surgery. Once the nasal structure is exposed, Dr. Stein will remove or reshape bone and cartilage. If needed, cartilage grafts are taken from the septum, ear, or rib to provide support or improve nasal shape. After reshaping, the nasal skin is redraped, and the incisions are closed with fine sutures.
