Reshape or Correct Your Teen’s Nose

Teenage rhinoplasty reshapes or corrects the nose’s appearance and function in adolescents. This surgery addresses issues such as nasal asymmetry, a dorsal hump (bump on the bridge), a wide or upturned nasal tip, large or uneven nostrils, and breathing problems caused by structural abnormalities like a deviated septum. Performed once nasal growth is nearly complete—usually around age 16 for girls and 17 for boys—teenage rhinoplasty can improve both aesthetics and function, helping young patients feel more confident and breathe more easily.

What Teenage Rhinoplasty Can Do for You

Teenage rhinoplasty can enhance your teen’s appearance and improve their confidence by correcting both cosmetic and functional issues with the nose. Whether fixing aesthetic concerns or addressing breathing problems, rhinoplasty provides lasting results that positively impact self-esteem and well-being. A teenage rhinoplasty can help with:

  • Correcting a dorsal hump or bump on the nose bridge
  • Reducing or reshaping a wide or upturned nasal tip
  • Fixing nasal asymmetry caused by trauma or genetics
  • Adjusting nostril size for better facial balance
  • Improving breathing issues related to a deviated septum
  • Narrowing a wide nasal bridge for a more refined appearance
  • Correcting a crooked nose for better symmetry
  • Reducing the overall size of the nose to better fit facial proportions
  • Smoothing irregularities in the nasal profile for a more natural look

Am I a Good Candidate for Teenage Rhinoplasty?

A good candidate for teenage rhinoplasty is someone who has completed most of their nasal growth, typically around age 16 for girls and 17 for boys. Additionally, your teen should be in good overall health with no underlying medical conditions that could complicate surgery or recovery. It’s important that your teen has realistic expectations and is emotionally mature enough to handle the physical and psychological aspects of surgery.

During your consultation, Dr. Stein will evaluate your teen’s candidacy by assessing nasal growth, discussing desired outcomes, and reviewing any medical concerns. He will ensure that rhinoplasty is the right choice both cosmetically and medically, ensuring optimal, safe results tailored to your teen’s needs.

What Happens During Teenage Rhinoplasty?

Teenage rhinoplasty begins with your teen being placed under general anesthesia, ensuring they are fully asleep throughout the procedure. Dr. Stein will make precise incisions, either externally through an open rhinoplasty (a small incision across the columella) or internally via a closed rhinoplasty (incisions made inside the nostrils), depending on the complexity of the case. Open rhinoplasty allows for better visibility and is often used for more complex reshaping, while closed rhinoplasty leaves no visible scars.

Dr. Stein carefully reshapes the underlying bone and cartilage. Bone can be filed down to smooth a dorsal hump, while cartilage may be trimmed or repositioned to correct asymmetry or refine the nasal tip. If functional concerns such as a deviated septum are present, they will be addressed at this stage. The entire procedure takes 2-3 hours. After reshaping, the nasal structure is stabilized with internal splints or sutures, and an external splint is applied to protect the nose and maintain its new shape.

Your Teen’s Consultation With Dr. Stein

During the consultation, Dr. Stein will discuss your teen’s concerns and desired outcomes in detail. Dr. Stein will then perform a thorough examination of their nose, assessing both its appearance and internal structure. He may take photographs for analysis and to demonstrate potential changes. Dr. Stein will also review their medical history and ensure they are a suitable candidate for surgery. Finally, he will explain the procedure, recovery process, and expected results and answer any questions you or your teen may have.

What Can I Expect From Recovery?

In the first week after your teen’s rhinoplasty, you can expect swelling, bruising around the eyes, and nasal congestion. A splint will be placed on the nose for protection, and it will be removed around day 7. Your teen should rest with their head elevated to reduce swelling, and they may experience mild discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication.

By the second week, much of the visible bruising and swelling will subside, allowing your teen to return to school or normal activities. However, strenuous exercise and contact sports should be avoided for at least 4-6 weeks. The nose will continue to refine and heal over the following months, with final results becoming fully apparent around 12-18 months after surgery.
