Refresh your under-eye region

A lower eyelid lift, or lower blepharoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes or repositions excess fat, tightens sagging skin, and smooths wrinkles in the lower eyelid area. This procedure targets under-eye bags, puffiness, and dark circles, which often create a tired appearance. By making a small incision just below the lash line or inside the eyelid, the surgeon can access and remove or redistribute fat, tighten muscles, and remove excess skin, resulting in a smoother, more youthful contour around the eyes.

What a lower eyelid lift can do for you

A lower eyelid lift can significantly rejuvenate your appearance by addressing multiple concerns around your eyes. This procedure enhances your natural beauty by removing or repositioning fat and tightening skin, giving you a refreshed, youthful look. Here’s what it can help with:

  • Reducing under-eye bags
  • Smoothing wrinkles and fine lines
  • Tightening sagging lower eyelid skin
  • Diminishing puffiness under the eyes
  • Improving dark circles for a brighter appearance
  • Removing excess skin for a firmer lower eyelid
  • Minimizing the appearance of hollow or sunken eyes

Am I a good candidate for a lower eyelid lift?

You may be a good candidate for a lower eyelid lift if you have noticeable under-eye bags, puffiness, sagging skin, or dark circles that make you appear tired or older than you feel. Ideal candidates are in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and do not suffer from serious eye conditions. This procedure is particularly effective for those bothered by excess fat or skin in the lower eyelid area that cannot be addressed with non-surgical treatments.

However, it’s important that you don’t have uncontrolled medical issues, such as hypertension or chronic dry eye, as these conditions could complicate the surgery or recovery. During your consultation, Dr. Stein will thoroughly assess your health, medical history, and aesthetic goals to determine if a lower eyelid lift is right for you.

What happens during the lower eyelid lift?

During a lower eyelid lift, you will be placed under IV deep sedation. The procedure begins with a precise incision, which may be placed just below the lower lash line (subciliary approach) or inside the eyelid (transconjunctival approach), depending on the extent of correction needed and the specific characteristics of your eyelid anatomy.

Once the incision is made, Dr. Stein will carefully access the fat pads beneath the skin, either removing or repositioning the fat to reduce puffiness and smooth the contour of your lower eyelid. The orbicularis oculi muscle may be tightened if necessary to provide additional support. Excess skin is then conservatively trimmed to avoid any “hollow” appearance. Finally, fine sutures are used to close the incision. The entire procedure lasts 1-2 hours.

    Your consultation with Dr. Stein

During your consultation with Dr. Stein, he will carefully evaluate your facial structure and discuss your concerns and goals for a lower eyelid lift. He will examine the skin around your eyes, assess muscle tone, and check for any underlying medical conditions that might affect the procedure. You’ll receive a personalized treatment plan, where Dr. Stein will explain the surgical approach, expected outcomes, and recovery process in detail. This ensures all your questions are answered and you feel confident moving forward with your surgery.

What can I expect from recovery?

After your lower eyelid lift, you can expect swelling and bruising around the eyes, which will peak within the first 48-72 hours. You’ll need to keep your head elevated and apply cold compresses to help reduce swelling. Most patients experience minimal discomfort, which can be managed with prescribed pain medication.

You should avoid strenuous activity, including bending or lifting, for at least two weeks. By the end of the first week, the majority of swelling and bruising will begin to subside, and sutures are typically removed within 5-7 days. You can resume light activities at this point, but full recovery, including the fading of bruising and final results, can take up to six weeks. Dr. Stein will provide personalized recovery guidelines to ensure optimal healing.

    Complementary procedures…

To enhance the results of your lower eyelid lift, you may consider complementary procedures such as a brow lift to elevate drooping brows or a facelift to address sagging in the mid and lower face. Combining these procedures can provide a more comprehensive facial rejuvenation, creating a balanced, youthful appearance tailored to your specific aesthetic goals.
