Like many, you’re unhappy with the contours of your face and have decided that you’re ready for a surgical solution. Rhinoplasty surgery is the ideal procedure for patients who want dramatic changes to their appearance with a one-time treatment. However, many patients are left worried about extensive recovery times and potentially large scars. If that sounds like you, we’ve got some good news!
Dr. Stein is a highly-skilled, double board-certified facial plastic surgeon. He performs all types of rhinoplasty surgeries for both men and women, young and old. He understands every case is unique and requires individualized treatment. Dr. Stein has extensive experience with primary rhinoplasties, ethnic rhinoplasties (Middle-Eastern/African-American/Asian), and complicated revision rhinoplasties. Dr. Stein uses only the most advanced surgical techniques to ensure an optimal outcome with minimal pain, scarring, or downtime.
What Happens During Rhinoplasty Surgery?
Rhinoplasty surgery is done under deep twilight anesthesia (IV sedation) and typically takes around just 1-2 hours for Dr. Stein. Complex procedures may take slightly longer. Dr. Stein makes several small incisions that give him the ability to sculpt your desired shape. All surgical procedures are done in our nationally accredited state-of-the-art on-site surgical facility.
A revision rhinoplasty is just what it sounds like. It is a second, third (or even more) rhinoplasty procedure. Usually those who elect to have a revision rhinoplasty are those that are not happy with the outcome of their initial rhinoplasty. The initial rhinoplasty procedure is called a primary rhinoplasty. Most of the time, revision rhinoplasties are more complex procedures and also have higher risks than primary rhinoplasty procedures.
There are two major incision techniques for rhinoplasty surgeries; open and closed. Dr. Stein may choose to enlist either depending on the severity of changes you’d like made. Each patient and Dr. Stein decide together, before surgery, which method will be done.
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty surgeries are done exclusively inside the nostril. There are no incisions outside of the nostril. Closed procedures are ideal for patients who want minor changes with zero visible scars. However, the procedure does give Dr. Stein limited access to the tip structures of the nose.

Open Rhinoplasty
Occasionally, Dr. Stein will opt for an open rhinoplasty allowing him better access. In this case, incisions are well-hidden within the natural creases of the skin. Most often the only incision outside of the nostril is on the columella, which is the small area of skin under the nose separating the nostrils. It is hidden very well by the shadows of the nose. Patients who would like more extensive changes to the nasal structure can benefit from open rhinoplasty surgeries.
Rhinoplasty Recovery
Most patients are surprised to learn they only need about one week before they can return to work (or school). Although it can take up to 2-weeks for the initial surgical swelling, you’re free to apply mineral-based makeup as needed.
Will You Have Scars?
Patients typically only have minor rhinoplasty scars that are very inconspicuous and very hard to see. Dr. Stein has perfected the art of wound closures which improves healing times and minimizes scars. Dr. Stein will also provide you with a scar management plan to keep scars at bay once you’ve fully recovered. Because UV-rays play a large role in the appearance of scars, you’ll need to avoid sun exposure throughout the healing process.
Whether you have an open or closed rhinoplasty, Dr. Stein will do his best to ensure an optimal outcome each and every time. During your in-person consultation, Dr. Stein will perform a full facial analysis and determine which procedure might be best for you.
