Most types of plastic surgery are performed to correct the effects of aging or other changes that happen over time. However, many people who choose to have a nose job or rhinoplasty have been unhappy with the appearance of their nose since childhood and longed to have it fixed. Fortunately, you may already be old enough for this life-changing procedure.
What is Rhinoplasty or a Nose Job?
A rhinoplasty, more casually known as a nose job, corrects many types of concerns with the size, shape, width, or other aspects of the nose. This procedure can adjust the nostrils, tip of the nose, and width or shape of the nasal bridge to give you a nose that brings your features into balance. Because the nose forms such a central part of the face, changing a feature that bothers you can greatly improve your confidence.
How Old Do You Have to Be to Get a Nose Job?
If you have a noticeably large, oddly shaped, or asymmetrical nose, you may have realized it at a young age. You must be 18 or older to have rhinoplasty, but you must also meet other criteria. Good candidates for a nose job:
- Have no major health problems
- Have reasonable expectations
- Understand the risks and benefits
- Are prepared to take the necessary time for recovery
- Have a positive attitude
Only a consultation can determine whether you are a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Dr. Stein has performed thousands of rhinoplasty procedures, including complex and challenging types. He will help you understand what you can expect from your results and whether a nose job is the right choice for you.
How is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Dr. Stein will perform your rhinoplasty under IV sedation to keep you comfortable and relaxed without the risks of general anesthesia. Depending on the type of changes that will be made, the procedure may be an open rhinoplasty or closed rhinoplasty. A closed procedure uses incisions inside the nostrils and is used for more minor corrections. An open procedure uses an incision at the base of the nose between the nostrils and gives your surgeon more access.
What is Recovery Like After Rhinoplasty?
You can expect some swelling, bruising, and soreness after your nose job. Dr. Stein will prescribe pain medication and monitor your progress during follow-up visits. You will receive detailed instructions based on the type of rhinoplasty that was performed. Most people can return to their usual daily activities within seven to ten days. However, people generally prefer to wait about two weeks to return to work or social situations.
How Long Does a Nose Job Last?
Because the appearance of your nose is defined by bone and cartilage, which do not change with age, your nose job results can last a lifetime. Most people will never need another procedure, especially if the first one is performed correctly. People who are unhappy with the results of another surgeon’s nose job often see Dr. Stein for a revision rhinoplasty to correct it.
