Chemical peels are among the most effective, versatile treatment options available. They work by chemically removing outer layers of skin to a controlled depth, resulting in smoother, brighter skin. Chemical peels can address a wide range of concerns, from pigmentation issues to fine lines and wrinkles.

What is a Chemical Peel?

Chemical peels are facial treatments that usually contain acids such as salicylic, glycolic, and trichloroacetic acids. The most intensive type of peel uses phenol, also known as carbolic acid. This powerful procedure is performed by Dr. Stein under general anesthesia for your comfort. While light peels only treat superficial issues, a phenol peel works deeply enough to remove scars, deep signs of aging, and skin laxity.

What to Expect During a Chemical Peel

You will be under general anesthesia for your comfort during your phenol peel. Dr. Stein calculates the correct time for the chemical peel to work and then neutralizes it to stop the chemical activity. Your skin will be treated with a protective serum, an important step since the skin has received an intensive treatment.

How Many Chemical Peels Are Needed to See Results?

You might have a light chemical peel at a med spa as often as every few weeks to achieve and maintain your desired results. Medium peels often provide results lasting three to six months. The number of treatments you will need to see results depends on the issues you want to treat but often ranges from three to six

The phenol peel Dr. Stein performs only requires one peel to achieve results. While it does have more recovery time than shallower peels, it works deep into the dermis, producing results that can last ten years or more. You will see your full results as your skin recovers.

What is Recovery Like After a Phenol Peel?

Light chemical peels generally require no downtime. A medium peel might result in a few days of flaking and redness. A phenol peel, which should only be performed by highly trained professionals, requires two to three weeks. Redness can last up to a few months.

In the days after your peel, you can expect redness, sensitivity, peeling, and crusting. Dr. Stein and his team will provide you with aftercare instructions. Avoiding sun exposure is extremely important since your skin will be sensitive to sun damage.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

A phenol peel is not right for everyone. While other chemical peels are safe for most people, a phenol peel is generally appropriate for healthy adults with fair to light skin. Candidates should be prepared to make a commitment to the recovery process in order to achieve their goals. You cannot have a phenol peel if you have irritated or broken skin in the treatment area.
