Do you have a weak chin that negatively affects your facial profile and jawline? Some people try dermal fillers to add volume and definition to their chin. Though this may achieve the desired result, it’s short-lived. Dr. Stein can give you long-lasting improvement with genioplasty.

What is Genioplasty (Chin Augmentation)?

Genioplasty is a surgery that improves the appearance of the chin, typically by enhancing its shape and projection. Often called chin augmentation, this is usually done with an implant. Your surgeon places an implant over the chin bone to create a stronger, more defined chin and jawline. Chin augmentation can also help reduce the appearance of a double chin.

How Long Do Chin Implants Last?

Though non-surgical options like dermal fillers may improve a weak chin, they have one major downfall: temporary results. Dermal fillers are injectable gel-like substances that gradually dissolve over several months. Chin implants, however, are typically silicone and designed to last a lifetime. Chin augmentation results are permanent unless you choose to have the implant removed later.

How Does Chin Augmentation Work?

Chin augmentation is a fairly quick, simple procedure with lifelong benefits. Dr. Stein performs genioplasty on an outpatient basis with IV sedation or local anesthesia, often in an hour or less. Before the surgery, he will work with you to select the best implant. Chin implants come in multiple shapes, sizes, and materials, making personalizing the results to your unique facial structure and aesthetic preferences easy.

Dr. Stein will make a small incision under your chin to place the implant. This will be inconspicuous once healed. He then carefully inserts the chosen implant over your jawbone. Dr. Stein often combines chin augmentation with other procedures, such as rhinoplasty or a facelift if needed.

What to Expect After Chin Augmentation Surgery

After your quick procedure, you’ll be able to go home to rest and recover. Most patients return to work in about a week. You can expect some swelling, redness, and mild discomfort during this time. You should keep your head elevated for two weeks and may want to eat only soft foods for a few days. Though you can resume most normal activities in a week, avoid strenuous exercise and contact sports for at least two to three weeks.

Am I a Good Candidate for Genioplasty?

If you’re bothered by a weak chin and undefined jawline, chin augmentation may help. Ideal candidates should be healthy adults with realistic expectations. During a detailed consultation, Dr. Stein will assess your facial structure and discuss your goals to help you create a customized treatment plan.
