Our eyes not only allow us to see the world but also portray our facial expressions and emotions. Many people’s eyelids begin to sag and bulge as they grow older, making them appear tired and angry. At Stein Plastic Surgery, Dr. Stein uses blepharoplasty to readjust the eyelids to their natural, youthful appearance.
What Types of Eyelid Lifts are There?
Eyelid lifts, or blepharoplasty procedures, are cosmetic surgeries to restore the eyes’ natural, youthful appearance. There are two types of eyelid lifts: upper eyelid lift and lower eyelid lift.
The upper eyelid lift repositions fat deposits, tightens underlying muscle, and removes excess skin on the upper eyelid. Many patients feel less tired from not having to raise their heavier eyelids and may experience improved peripheral vision.
The lower eyelid lift repositions undereye fat pads, tightens muscles, and removes sagging skin on the lower eyelids. Lower eyelid lifts remove eyebags and last a lifetime.
How Long Does Blepharoplasty Last?
Blepharoplasty may last a lifetime, but upper eyelids may experience sagging as you age. The longevity of your procedure depends on your current age and the significance of your initial sagging.
Lower eyelid lifts rarely need to be repeated, but upper eyelids may need maintenance after 5-7 years. Some patients do not need another blepharoplasty, but may benefit from an eyebrow lift.
How Long is Recovery from Blepharoplasty?
Recovery from an eyelid lift is short compared to other plastic surgery procedures. Dr. Stein uses techniques that minimize post-op swelling and bruising. Most patients feel comfortable returning to work and other activities within a few days.
Strenuous activities should wait for up to two weeks or until Dr. Stein gives you clearance. During your consultation and after your surgery, Dr. Stein will give detailed instructions about your individual recovery plan, including resting period, eye care, and any medications you may need to take.
What are the Benefits of an Eyelid Lift?
Many patients say they look and feel refreshed after their eyelid lift. Dr. Stein uses artful surgical techniques to restore your youthful eye shape while maintaining facial balance and symmetry. With a short recovery period, most patients feel better in a few days, enjoying improved visual field and emotional well-being.
One of the best parts of an eyelid lift is improved confidence. Many patients feel more self-assured in their appearance without hooded eyes or eye bags.
Should I Get an Eyelid Lift?
You may be a good candidate for an eyelid lift if you are:
- Affected by drooping upper eyelids, hooding, or shifting tissue
- Struggling with under-eye puffiness
- Experiencing a downward pull of the lower lashline
Patients should be in good overall health, do not smoke, and avoid medications that increase the risk of bleeding. You may need to quit smoking or taking such medications before receiving blepharoplasty.
