Deep textural and pigmentation concerns can be challenging to treat, even with the most effective lasers and other options. Chemical peels are an effective, customizable treatment option that can address a wide range of skin conditions. While chemical peels come in many forms, some are only performed by experienced plastic surgeons like Dr. Stein.
What is a Chemical Peel?
A chemical peel is a topical treatment applied to the face and left on for a specified period of time. These peels typically use acids such as salicylic, glycolic, and trichloroacetic acids that chemically exfoliate the outer layers of the skin to remove signs of aging, hyperpigmentation, and textural issues. A phenol peel uses carbolic acid, a stronger compound than other peel ingredients, and is performed by a surgeon.
How Long Does a Chemical Peel Take?
Dr. Stein offers phenol peels, which offer maximum benefits, especially in the hands of an experienced provider. This type of chemical peel is usually performed using general anesthesia or sedation. It is applied to one part of the face at a time, and the overall procedure takes about 90 minutes. Unlike a med spa peel that lasts 20 to 30 minutes, a phenol peel is a more intensive treatment that requires a surgeon’s skill and training to ensure your safety and best results.
What Does a Chemical Peel Treat?
Lighter chemical peels are often used to treat concerns such as dullness, fine lines, and minor pigmentation issues. A phenol peel is intended to work on the deeper layers of skin, treating issues such as:
- Deep lines and wrinkles
- Significant scars
- Sagging skin
- Precancerous lesions
- Severe sun damage
- Dark spots
While a phenol peel requires more downtime than lighter facial peels, it has a much more significant impact and offers a number of benefits, including deeper, longer-lasting results.
What is Recovery Like After a Chemical Peel?
Light med spa chemical peels generally have little to no downtime. However, you can expect some recovery time after a phenol peel. You can expect that your skin will look very red and feel sensitive and swollen after your peel. Over the next two weeks, you can expect significant peeling and flaking as the treated skin is shed. You will receive detailed skincare instructions, including diligent sunscreen use and avoiding sun exposure.
What Results Will I See With a Chemical Peel?
Flaking and peeling after a chemical peel usually last two to three weeks, while redness may last a month or more. As the treated skin peels away, you will see a smooth, rejuvenated service that looks dramatically brighter and clearer. Most people only need one phenol peel in a lifetime, with results lasting many years. Some people choose to combine their peel with surgical procedures such as a facelift or maintain their results with laser treatments.
