Thinking about reshaping or resizing your nose? Depending on your needs, Dr. Stein might suggest an open rhinoplasty, which offers greater access to your nose’s structures for precise reshaping.

What is Open Rhinoplasty?

Open rhinoplasty is a surgical method that gives direct access to the nose’s internal structures. Dr. Stein performs it by making a small incision on the columella (the tissue between the nostrils), allowing him to make more precise adjustments.

How is Open Rhinoplasty Performed?

Performed under general anesthesia, the open rhinoplasty process generally takes 1-4 hours. The procedure includes:

  1. Making a small incision on the columella
  2. Lifting the skin to expose the nasal structures
  3. Making the necessary changes to the cartilage and bone
  4. Repositioning the skin and closing the incision

This approach is typically used for substantial changes to the nose’s structure. For smaller adjustments, Dr. Stein might recommend a closed rhinoplasty.

What Can Open Rhinoplasty Treat?

Open rhinoplasty is often used to:

  • Reduce or remove a hump on the bridge
  • Reshape the nasal tip
  • Correct breathing issues by straightening a deviated septum
  • Straighten and reshape nasal bones and cartilage
  • Narrow the width of the nose

Dr. Stein will evaluate your needs and advise the best approach for your goals.

Recovery After Open Rhinoplasty

After surgery, expect some swelling and bruising, which should subside within a week. Most patients return to work in 7-10 days. Full recovery, including resolution of residual swelling, may take a few months.

Are You a Good Candidate?

Good candidates are healthy, have realistic expectations, and are prepared for the recovery period. Only Dr. Stein can confirm if open rhinoplasty is the best approach for your desired results.
