Post Bariatric Surgery
After undergoing bariatric surgery, such as gastric bypass or gastric banding, many patients lose weight at a such a fast pace that the body is unable to keep up. With time, the skin loses elasticity and significant weight gain can cause the skin to be stretched beyond its normal limits. After weight loss, post-bariatric patients may consider additional surgeries to remove excess skin and stubborn fat deposits as they near their ideal body weight and sometimes even long before then.
Anyone in this position should congratulate themselves as they’ve already won a major part of the battle. If you are considering additional surgery, however, it’s important that you remain in good health, do not smoke and get moderate exercise. A consultation with your doctor will help ensure that your expectations for recontouring and reshaping your body are realistic and will compliment your weight loss.
Most patients will need to wait a minimum of one year after their bariatric surgery before considering additional surgical procedures. While body lifts are very common among post-bariatric patients, other procedure to consider include breast lifts, breast reductions (gynecomastia in men), facelifts and neck lifts. Surgical techniques and recovery times will vary according to each specific procedure.
